About the Nursery...
The Shellharbour City Council Nursery was established in Industrial Road, Oak Flats in the late 1980s. It was first designed to propagate plants for Council planting projects and for the area's parks and gardens. A large glass house was also established to look after the indoor plants for the Council Chambers.
During the next few years the nursery diversified, selling plants to landscapers, developers, contractors and the general public at wholesale prices, for a minimum number of 50 plants. We are now open to the public, developers, landscapers, schools and other nurseries with no minimum purchase. We stock a wide variety of plants, including local indigenous species, native plants to palms and exotic plants. The plants range in size from tubes to 300 mm pots.
Plants are supplied for Council gardens and projects including all of the bush regeneration sites, street tree replacement, National Tree Day projects and donations of plants to schools and community groups. Council donates more than 1700 plants each year to schools and community groups. We propagated 5,000 plants from seed collected from local indigenous plants for bush regeneration projects and Council Bushcare groups, bush regenerators and volunteers.
Go to the Bushcare page for more information. Each school in the Shellharbour City Local Government Area is provided with 25 plants each year well as a 25-plant donation on National Tree Day. Other donations will be considered by Council and may be submitted in writing. We also encourage work experience students to be involved in most aspects of plant production and nursery maintenance and have work placement from Peterborough special school who come to the nursery and propagate plants for two hours, once a week with their carer.
