On 16th October we will be celebrating World Food Day by harvesting the produce from the garden to donate to some families in our community who need a helping hand.

Short description—organiser

An important part of the philosophy of our community garden is everyone should have access to good food regardless of income. This is why we keep our annual fee low, we run social events where a large proportion of the food comes from the garden, we try to ensure there is always plenty of food in the garden to be harvested and that it's accessible to all members.

Fair food week is 10th-19th October this year, and World Food Day is on October 16. Fair food is about good food for everyone and ensuring famers are properly paid. This years theme for World Food Day is - FAMILY FARMING (including smallholder farmers): FEEDING THE WORLD, CARING FOR THE EARTH. These themes strongly align with our garden philosophies, and this year we have a some events to run in support of these food philosophies.

World Food Day on 16th October - We're going to harvest food from the shared plots and package it up to give to families in our immediate community who are going though a difficult time, and struggling to provide nutritious food for their families. We'd love to get some volunteers in the morning to help harvest the produce. Also, if anyone would like to donate food from their own private plots let us know. This is for one day only, however if any members have a problem with us using the garden produce please let us know.

As part of world food day this year the UN have been running a competition for kids to design a poster that reflects the theme of FAMILY FARMING: FEEDING THE WORLD, CARING FOR THE EARTH. We'd like to run our own local competition and will display the posters at the garden during fair food week, and give out some prizes at our social event at the end of the week. Guidelines: open to any child up to 17, present your design on an A4 size page (so we can have it laminated), include your name and age, and put it into the community garden letterbox by the end of Thursday 16th October.

To finish off Fair Food Week we're going to have a celebration of food and community at the garden, and invite members and non members to come along to share food from the garden (pizza, salad and maybe some burgers). We'd also like to do a food swap on the day and encourage anyone who has excess produce from their plots or home gardens to bring it along on the day and swap it with someone else. As always we are asking for a gold coin donation to cover the cost of extra food. We will also have the posters from our competition displayed and will be giving out some prizes for these, so we encourage all children to come along for the afternoon.

Please let us know if you are able to help us harvest produce on the morning of 16th October, and please encourage all your kids to design a poster for us to display at the community garden. You can contact us on Facebook or email us on yambacommunitygarden@gmail.com
